In the first and second parts of The Banner Saga, Markets are places where you can exchange Renown for Supplies or Items. Markets can be found in all major cities as well as in most villages.
For the multiplayer game's (Factions) Marketplace, please refer to the Strand article.
Buying Supplies[ | ]
Supplies are needed to feed your Caravan and keep its Morale high. Sometimes supplies can be acquired by other means (like quests or random events, but they can also be purchased in Markets.
- Each unit of Supplies can approximately sustain 100 people (Clansmen/Peasants, Fighters or Varl) for 1 day.
- Each Market has its own number of supplies' units and its own exchange rates. If the town where the Market is situated is in distress (e.g. siege) or hostile against your caravan, expect limited or no supplies and a high exchange rate (e.g. 1:1, i.e. 1 Renown gets you 1 unit of Supplies). On the contrary, when the times are better, exchange rates can be much lower, e.g. 1:8; stock-up on supplies when you find such a cheap price!
Buying Items[ | ]
Each Market has a random stock of Items with special properties. These can be equipped by your heroes and improve their battle performance.
- Renown costs increase with Item-Rank.
- In the first part of The Banner Saga, Rank-{1,2,3,4,5} items cost {5,10,15,20,25} Renown.
- In the second part of The Banner Saga, the Renown cost is twice the item Rank.
- A character can equip only items of equal or lower Rank than his own.
- Item stocks are randomly generated. Visiting the same Market in different play-throughs might have different items. It is common for high-rank items to appear early in the game, where you can neither purchase them nor equip them.
